Minfulness in a nutshell

You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf…

Mindfulness is often referred to as MBSR or mindfulness-based stress reduction. A mindfulness course helps teach you how to keep your attention in the here and now. It helps you be more aware of all aspects of yourself. By increasing your awareness, you are more able to spot positive events and pinpoint your own (stressful) thoughts and emotions. You’ll discover your habitual patterns and defense mechanisms. This will keep you from reacting on auto pilot as much, giving you more control over your life.

People naturally tend to try and flee from or fight negative events. This takes a lot of energy and creates tension. We often react in a primal, inconvenient or inefficient way. Mindfulness teaches you to feel more comfortable with ‘unpleasant’ thoughts or emotions. It is the way it is – and there is no need to change or qualify it. By learning to be more comfortable with unpleasantness and tension, you’ll be able to conserve more energy. Tension and stress won’t hold you in their thrall as much anymore.

We’re often told some version of the following: ‘Mindfulness isn’t for me – I can never get my thoughts to stop running on anyway’, or ‘I’m too restless for that’. Our mindfulness course will teach you how to deal with unrest and impatience better. and show you that the idea of ‘stopping’ your thoughts is a myth. You cannot stop your thoughts… But you can learn how to steer your attention in a different direction, causing you to worry less. With the right support and teachings, the world of mindfulness and what it can do for you will be revealed to you.

Mindfulness helps you create more calm and live in the here & now more, thus creating more space for relaxation, enjoyment and happiness.

Mindfulness in times of Covid-19. Now more than ever!

The many uncertainties brought upon us by Covid-19 are causing physical and mental strain, worrying and heightened emotions for lots of people. Mindfulness training will teach you to create space around all of these new experiences. The troublesome thoughts and feelings won’t go away, but you will find that there is more to life, and to you, than that. You are not your thoughts. They do not define you. This creates a sense of calm, from the inside out.

Where attention goes, energy flows. Giving your attention to what matters and needs to get done, here and now, instead of continuously checking the news and getting lost in thoughts of ‘what if’. Training your attention is a highly valuable skill, for you and for the people around you. This training will teach you how to do so!

Group training at our studio, or online from the comfort of your own home!

As of June 1st, we started offering physical group meetings for our 8-week (MBSR) Mindfulness Training once again. We are making sure to adhere to every safety regulation implemented by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment. If you would prefer to attend your training sessions via a Zoom live stream, rest assured! We also offer private trainings, either one-on-one or as a duo with a partner, friend, housemate or family member. Different rates apply for private training; for more information, please visit the bottom of the page. Alongside meditations, practical tools and exercises, we also engage in live sharing of your experiences and development throughout this training and talk about how you are implementing the elements you’ve learned in these strange times.

He is registered with the VMBN (Association of Mindfulness-Based Trainers in the Netherlands and Flanders) under trainer number 2017990. Guido: “I was about 20 years old when I first read the Tibetan Book of the Dead in my small attic bedroom. I was reading the letters, the words, the sentences, but was unable to truly grasp the context. I was, however, deeply fascinated, and could not help but want to understand more. I made the decision to exchange my budding career for a pair of sturdy walking shoes and went off to the Himalayas to find answers. I climbed majestic mountain summits, passing prayer flags caught in the wind, travelling from monastery to monastery. What is it those monks are doing when they meditate, what’s written down in those scrolls, why do they seem so deeply content and happy with next to nothing, and why do we in the west still feel discontented and unhappy even with everything we have at our fingertips?

Deeply touched, but also deeply lost, I met a Sadhu (a Hindu ascetic) by a waterfall. In a small, modest mountain hut, sleeping on hesian sacks for mattresses, he initiated me into the world of yoga philosophy, both mentally and physically. He never spoke, so we communicated through writing, and only ever if he felt doing so was ‘relevant’. And so I learned. ‘I am not my thoughts – life as I know it is an illusion.’ My worldview was turned completely upside-down, but in the process, I experienced a deep sense of peace and found the inner source of calm and wisdom. I decided to stay in India and move in with my teacher in his cave in Hampi, in the southern part of India. While on the way there, I fell ill and was forced to return to the Netherlands. Back home, with my illusions about life left shattered in my wake and my head still up in the clouds of the Himalayas, I had immense trouble grounding and finding my way again. I decided to spend a few years in Africa, working as a travel guide, driving my safari truck through wildife reserves, spending time among the elements and visiting local tribes to get my feet firmly planted on the ground again. It worked!

Once I returned to the Netherlands once more, I spent a few years happily, dedicatedly contributing to the growth of travel organisation Riksja Travel, while making sure to frequently get on my mat in my spare time. Many years later, a long way from where this journey first started, I now (finally) feel as though I am able to integrate east and west in my life. I have found my calling, which is perfectly in line with the above sentiment, in the field of mindfulness training. I am also the proud owner of Liv Yoga along with Jasmijn. This is where we first met, and where we got the opportunity to take our respective yoga journeys to the next level that we had both been searching for. Our aim and wish at Liv Yoga is to share the lifestyle of yoga with you, inspire one another and learn from one another, so that we can work together to make the world that little bit better.
